I’m currently reading Maugham’s chapter on Moby-Dick. Of these, I’ve only read Melville and Dostoevsky, but it looks like a pretty solid list. the same field of British fiction, I would add to our list Somerset Maugham's. The character appears briefly in the book The Bloody Red Baron by Kim Newman. A character named Ashenden also appears in several other of Maughams short stories.
Maugham also travelled far and wide to Europe, North America, the Far East, the South seas and beyond. A character named 'William Ashenden' is the narrator of Maughams 1930 novel Cakes and Ale. He studied in Dune and qualified as a doctor, but found his calling in writing. An expanded version of the prefaces–which provide biographical sketches of the authors and Maugham’s discussion of what makes each book great–was eventually published as a book titled The Art of Fiction: An Introduction to Ten Novels and their Authors (1955).
